Sportzfan Radio 161.1

@SportzfanRadio now available on iTunes!4 July 2010 161.1 – Daniel wonders whether Gambo feels unsettled having been moved from panel operator after the Professor’s return from Sydney.  Daniel also ponders the NBA feeding frenzy with free agents being signed for ridiculous figures including draft bust Darko Milicic getting a $20 million contract when everyone thought he should retire.  The Panel considers throwing themselves into the free agency market for a fat contract.  Gambo talks about the ‘mono cock’ in formula one racing.  Dan Butterly talks basketball with the Knicks potentially going after Amare Stoudemire, Joe Johnson and Tony Parker.  He says the Knicks fan base want LeBron, Chris Bosh and Dwayne Wade and won’t be satisfied with anything less.  The Gelding talks racing and takes the credit as he and the Sydney Colt combined for 4 winners and 4 placings from 8 selections.  Daniel and the Professor discuss the Boomers v ‘Argentina”.  Daniel nodded off during the game and wonders whether Brett Brown’s team got anything out of playing a non-representative team of rookies.  The Professor raises his idea of an NBL draft again as a means of getting publicity for the League.

Some dare I say "Mouth Watering" ties ahead at World Cup

All in all a promoters dream in the 2010 World Cup – so many games changing so many fortunes all hanging on a knife edge in the 3rd round!

  1. No bigger than Chile v Spain – a Spanish loss and they are out.
  2. Italy v Slovakia – Italy must win to get through (NZ v Paraguay to add some smeltz…I’m sorry spice).
  3. Japan v Denmark – winner through to the next round.
  4. Germany v Ghana – could the unthinkable happen and Germany not qualify for the round of 16?
  5. Our Socceroos v Serbia – Aussie win may get us through depending on results, Serbian win sees them into the next round.
  6. Slovenia v England – a must win for England or one of the tournament favourites is going home!  The spice is that if USA win, England must win by more to ensure a place in the next round.
  7. USA v Algeria – USA an unlikely member of the final 16 but should get through with a win.
  8. South Korea v Nigeria – Sth Korea will again move on to the round of 16 with a win.
  9. Greece v Argentina – Greece need to win by more than Sth Korea if they are to go through.  A tall order against an undefeated Argentinian team.
  10. France v the host nation – You would think a France win on paper but has all the team unrest and infighting taken its toll?  Besides if Uruguay v Mexico is a draw, this result doesn’t matter.
  11. Uruguay v Mexico – A winner heads the group whilst the loser may miss out.  A draw and both go through.

How good is that 12 out of 16 games with a direct result on the next round.

Magers League Rugby Ball21 June 2010 159.2 – Fiorenti continues discussing the fortunes of the Socceroos and gives his opinion on some underachieving countries at the World Cup, Paul Dalligan highlights the AFL leading the NRL 2 to 1 in the racism stakes, is disappointed at the state of NSW rugby and believes the Cockroaches will make changes and go for youth in State of Origin 3.  He also suggests the Professor’s Canterbury Bulldogs have picked up a likely player in Trent Hodkinson (now with Manly) who kicked two field goals late in the game to help Manly down the Rabbitohs.  The Panel looks at the AFL’s suggestion of the 2012 18 team league being broken up into Conferences and Sean wonders whether that may prevent Collingwood from ever playing Carlton in a Grand Final again.

Soccer ball21 June 2010 159.1 – Stan, the world’s oldest radio apprentice gives the AFL a rest in his rant this week and has the FFA fair and square in his sights at the thought of paying our next soccer coach up to $6 million.  Dan Butterly talks US sport particularly the musical chairs of NCAA conference realignment, NBA Championship game 7 and whether Kobe Bryant would have been the MVP of the finals series even if the Celtics had won, whether Tiger Woods can win the US Open from 4 shots back and his thought that the World Cup will end in a draw.  The Gelding calls in from the track at Bendigo where he has a runner, Queen Asa, going around.  He had a great day at the races on Saturday tipping 3 winners and a second.  In the ‘F’ word Mark Fiorenti muses on the problems of parking the “bus” with flat tyres and Sean informs listeners that parking the ‘bus’ is a real soccer tactic.

13 June 2010 158.2 – a search party is sent out for Mark Fiorenti… the Professor and Sean discuss Steve Strasburg’s debut for the Washington Nationals and wonder if the “Stras” has tried to do a deal with Don Smallgoods… the Panel discuss World Cup coaches that look like James Bond villains – Pim Verbeek won hands down, while where at it tackling the big issues- Pim change your hairstyle…it is bad hair day for you everyday!  Fiorenti says bidding for the 2018 World Cup has damaged Australian soccer’s credibility… Dalligan says Gold Coast will have no room to hide Karmichael Hunt on his poor showing in the VFL yesterday and NSW to beat Queensland 16-10 in State of Origin 2.

Aussie soccer officials finally see the writing on the wall!

As US comedian RonWhite says “You can’t fix stupid, because stupid is forever”.

Stupid is exactly what the Aussie bid for the 2018 World Cup was!!

As we discussed with Mark Fiorenti on Sportzfan Radio several months ago – Australia had NO chance of success with the bid.  The Aussie camp was still trying to convince us that we were a realistic bidder, notwithstanding Sepp Blatter (FIFA President) telling anyone who cared to listen that Europe would be the preferred venue (for that read will be the venue) in 2018 and FIFA also reinforcing that with Australian representatives at every turn.

It took our own Asian Football Confederation to jolt us back to reality when its President came out in support of the European bid this week.

One wonders at the capacity/capability of those running Aussie soccer not to be able to see the forest for the trees.

The AFL/NRL must be laughing out loud at the time and money wasted on that part of the bid.

What does that say for the 2022 bid?……more on that one later.

6 June 2010 – Part 2 – Hear Nicole query the honesty of Melbourne Storm players over signing multiple contracts.  She says Dalligan is mistaken if he thinks they didn’t know something was wrong.  Fiorenti talks about the World Cup and the Socceroo’s 3-1 defeat at the hands of the US. The Panel discuss Jason Akermanis’ newspaper article and query whether the Bulldogs penalty is too harsh.  The Panel also muse on their favourite movie coaches of sporting teams and discuss listeners tweets with Hoosier’s coach, Norman Dale getting the most support.

6 June 2010 – Part 1 – Thundering start to the show with Dalligan fired up ranting on the AFL poaching NRL players.  US reporter Dan Butterly thinks the Lakers will beat the Celtics in NBA and Blackhawks will lift the Stanley Cup after game 7.  The Gelding although picking two winners at Flemington says he would have been more successful but for some “interesting” rides by certain jockeys.  Long time Fitzroy supporter, Stan has some observations on the career of AFL Legend Kevin Murray.
