The Spring Carnival has its first major race of the Spring Carnival with the running of the Caulfield Cup today. The track is currently rated a Heavy 8 with the rail out 6 metres for the entire circuit. The Everest is also being run at Randwick.

After all the rain during the week we had expected a heavier rating for the Flemington track, however, it is currently rated a Soft 5 with the rail out 10 metres for the entire circuit. Rain is forecast during the day so that may affect the rating during the meeting.

It was a case of what might have been last Saturday at Flemington. A win and two seconds from the four selections. We’re going to try and do better today at Caulfield where the track is rated a Soft 5 with the rail out 11 metres for the entire circuit.

Grant Thomas – what needs to change at St Kilda FC to win a premiership – podcast

Why hasn’t St Kilda FC won a premiership since 1966? Grant Thomas provides his take on what the club needs to address to make the last day in September.

Grant is well placed to comment having played 72 games for the club and coached St Kilda from 2001 until 2006. He has also written for the Age, appeared on SEN and was part of the Footy Classified panel on channel 9.

The less said about the mid week outing the better. As all good teams do, we’ll learn from it and improve. The Moonee Valley track is rated a Good 4 but with the temperatures being in the low 30’s expect a track upgrade during the day. The rail is in the true position for the entire circuit.

We were on fire at Caulfield’s mid week race meeting with 3 winners and a placing from 4 tips. For all the mathematicians out there that’s a 75% win rate.
