New Mets manager like the boy with the barrow!

Professor’s Rant #2

I guess there is one thing we can say for the New York Mets management now being led by Sandy Alderson…..they picked a recycled manager in Terry Collins who has a winning record (444-434)!!  That at least allows me to put a tick in one box for Jeff Wilpon, Alderson & Co (and there haven’t been too many of those handed out by me to the Mets over the last few seasons).

Collins main claim to fame seems to be that he managed teams that finished second…..that’s right, second, in their division five years out of six.  I guess that is better than appointing a potential manager from a list that seemed packed with candidates who had losing records and were sacked from their previous roles (Collins, Chip Hale, Bob Melvin, Wally Backman, Clint Hurdle, Don Wakamatsu to name but a few).  Let’s look at some of the candidates – recently sacked Mariner’s manager Don Wakamatsu for one.  The allegations of ‘losing’ the players during a tough season isn’t a great start to a resume, especially when you combine that with a 100+ loss season and you have a recipe for disaster in New York.  Let’s also take a look at Wally Backman (currently managing the Mets affiliate the Cyclones).  He was sacked as manager of the Diamondbacks in 2004 just four days after starting in the job after not revealing two arrests and ‘financial problems’ to the interview panel.  One heck of a stint in the big leagues Wally.

So, my burning questions are these.  Weren’t there any potential managers sitting out there with winning records?  Weren’t there any that had World Series experience?  Why wasn’t Bobby Valentine at least interviewed?  He is curently not managing, having come off a very successful stint in the Japanese league with the Chiba Lotte Marines where he won the Japan Series and the inaugural Asia Series, but perhaps more importantly, has managed successfully before in the heat of the New York sporting spotlight garnering a 536-467 record over seven seasons (which included two 90+ win seasons).  Don’t forget he is the last manager to take the Mets to the World Series.

In any event, out of all that, Terry Collins has the job and now gets to confront what to do about closer Francisco Rodriguez, the non performing Jason Bay and Luis Castillo and Carlos Beltran in the final year of a seven year contract.

Like the boy with the barrow, Terry has it all in front of him!

Sportzfan Radio #178.1

@SportzfanRadio now available on iTunes!7 November 2010 178.1 – Stan doesn’t take long to take Daniel to task about the performance on the Melbourne Tigers and queries whether the Tigers, Tiger Woods or the Australian cricket team will be the next to win. Daniel hints that one of the Tigers imports could be cut very soon. Stan wonders whether the Tigers should bring back Lindsay Gaze. One of our twitterers says bring back Andrew Gaze or the Tigers will remain a mess. Dan Butterly talks US sport including NFL with the Randy Moss/Minnesota Vikings/Brad Childress/Brett Favre debacle and the will she or won’t she tell the NFL. He also discusses the quarter back ‘controversy’ at the Washington Redskins with Mike Shanahan benching Donovan McNabb at the end of a game. MLB is wrapped up with the San Francisco Giants overcoming the Texas Rangers in five games. In College football, the Air Force Academy defeats Army to take the Commander in Chief’s trophy. The Panel talks with the Gelding and JC about JC’s horse ‘It’ll Be Fantastic’ then goes on to discuss the Emirates Stakes day and the winners and losers at the track.

Sportzfan Radio #175.1

@SportzfanRadio now available on iTunes!17 October 2010 175.1 – The show starts with the Professor asking the Gelding whether the Caulfield Cup race meeting should have been postponed because of the bad weather. Stan tells Daniel that in the season opening NBL match the Melbourne Tigers were hopeless. This then prompts a discussion of the Tigers players. In the US report this week Susan Shan talks about Brett Favre and alleged problematic texts and emails to a NY Jets female employee.  San Francisco 49ers are her surprise due to their poor showing in the NFL season so far.  In MLB she thinks Cliff Lee is beatable but not likely during the post season.  She thinks the Phillies and Rangers will make it through to the World Series whilst the Cubs and Cardinals were the biggest busts of the 2010 season.  She doesn’t think Bobby Valentine will be going back to the Mets any time soon.  The Gelding discusses the Caulfield Cup day races and observes Chris Munce is one of only seven jockeys who have won the Big 4 – Melbourne Cup, Caulfield Cup, Cox Plate and Golden Slipper.  The Professor calls it the ‘Grand Slam’ of racing.  Gelding awards an ‘S-Hit’ ride to the jockey of Shocking who he says should have won easily.  The Professor and the Gelding again talk about their interest in Danish Rock.

Sportzfan Radio #172.1

@SportzfanRadio now available on iTunes!26 September 2010 172.1 – The Gelding starts the program with an impersonation of Stan. The Panel then gets into a discussion of the drawn AFL Grand Final and the ramifications of the replay. Daniel says the AFL should give 45,000 tickets to each competing Club. Will there be another Grand Final parade? will there be another Footy Show? will there be different Gtand Finals replayed in the all night marathon? Dan Butterly tells Paul Dalligan he couldn’t watch cricket for five days with no result. Dan also talks MLB pennant race he thinks the Seattle Mariners will probably lose 100 games even with the roster thay have and feels the Yankees will make the World Series again. In NFL, Dan looks at Michael Vick’s re-emergance as a starting quarterback with the Philadelphia Eagles and he thinks Brett Favre is regretting coming back. The Professor discusses last week’s Michigan State trick play to beat Notre Dame in overtime. In NBA, Dan thinks Carmelo Anthony will be traded to the New Jersey Nets within the next 48 hours. The Gelding takes pride in the fact that he and the Sydney Colt from 9 selections at both Moonee Valley and Randwick had a return of 6 winners and 2 thirds. The Panel don’t necessarily agree with the Gelding that you can have a “good seventh” in a race with nine runners. The Panel also agrees that Dr Leslie’s CSA seems to have taken up a permanent position after the racing segment.

Sportzfan Radio #170.1

@SportzfanRadio now available on iTunes!12 September 2010 170.1 – A political discussion starts the program with Daniel finding it hard to work out why, if the Western Bulldogs scored more than Sydney and won the game, why didn’t the Coalition win the election as they scored more than the Labor Party.  The Professor’s reveals that his nomination for the name of the horse the syndicate will be racing is Sir Yorrick.  Dan Butterly talks US sport including discussion of the NFL opening round, the MLB playoff races, the Air Force Academy’s great win over BYU in College football, Lauren Jackson winning another MVP award in the WNBA and Boise State’s fortunes in basketball in the coming season. The Gelding talks racing and chats about his tips for Moonee Valley and the Sydney Colts selections at Rosehill. He says that of the eight selections made by he and the Colt they garnered 5 firsts, 2 placings and a fourth. Sportzfan Radio #167.1

@SportzfanRadio now available on iTunes!15 August 2010 167.1 – The Panel kick off with a discussion on the proposed changes to AFL rules. In the US report Dan Butterly talks about the Mets Felix Rodriguez and the alleged attack of his girlfriend’s father at Citibank Stadium and agrees with the Professor that he may have tried for one strike out too many. He also discusses the MLB pennant races and still has hope that the Rockies will qualify for the playoffs. There is a discussion of the various Commissioner’s salaries (Bud Selig from the MLB wins by a long way) and the Professor wonders whether there is value for money, Dan thinks David Stern from the NBA is doing the best job at present. Dan thinks the Knicks are a dysfunctional franchise and this is evidenced by the fact that they have approached Isiah Thomas to become a “consultant” for the franchise. There is also an announcement by Dan of a cultural exchange between the Southern Football League and the Mountain West Conference with the SFL CEO visiting the MWC in the US for a week’s internship. The Gelding and the Sydney Colt talk racing and provide a comnprehensive review of the Caulfield and Rosehill results.

Sportzfan Radio #166.1

@SportzfanRadio now available on iTunes!8 August 2010 166.1 –The Panel talk about the AFL using technology for deciding whether a goal is kicked or not.  Stan says maybe the umpires need regular checks on their eye sight as over a period of time mistakes can affect the outcome of games.  Marie Baker makes a return to the show with her US report and says human error is part of sport so why sweat over mistakes made by referees.  She believes Brett Fravre is a drama queen who needs his own annual reality “decision” show and doesn’t think Shaq changing NBA teams again will affect his legacy.  She also feels Tiger Woods probably won’t get back to the top in golf and that A-Rod’s 600th homer as the youngest person ever to reach that mark, may not be enough to get him into MLB’s Hall of Fame.  The Gelding provides the answers to Saturday’s racing at both Flemington and Randwick.  He says it was a tough day with many long priced horses saluting and elects not to award the S-Hit ride of the day to the jockey of Bonindi but does say her ride “lacked imagination”.  No luck again for Queen Asa this week although she did run fourth so getting closer to a placing.  He tells Travis that he has no plans to run it in the Spring Carnival.  The Professor looks at the farcical situation with the Commonwealth Games venues in Delhi being incomplete with only 60 days until the start of the events.  Daniel believes the Games organizing committee should adopt the Andrew Demetriou line  “Everything is fine….there is no problem.”  A National Baseball League will finally return to Australia in November with 6 team competing.  Daniel is surprised that Stan can remember back to baseball in the late 1920’s.

Coming up on Sportzfan Radio #163

On Sunday’s show the Professor is back behind the Panel and will have NRL commentator Nick Tedeschi and basketball expert Daniel Eade as guests.  Aside from the normal disection of the week in sports they will be talking with US reporter Dan Butterly about Major League Baseball and the National League finally winning an All Star game, NBA free agency and an interesting video from the Mountain West women’s soccer championships of 2009.

We’ll cross to a restaurant in Chinatown to talk racing with The Gelding, who’ll discuss the winners and losers at Caulfield.  Also on the show “F” Word’s Mark Fiorenti will wrap up the recently completed World Cup and talk about whether soccer needs the introduction of a match review panel.  Paul Dalligan will discuss the revelations about the Melbourne Storm higher salary cap breaches and give his assessment of the likely finalists as the NRL season nears its conclusion.
