Sportzfan Radio show #235.1
19 February 2012 235.1 – Sportzfan Stan kick started the show with his weekly rant, this time on the AFL’s first financial loss in a decade amounting to $23.6 millon. The AFL’s blame-game included the start up costs of the Gold Coast and Greater Western Sydney teams. John O’Callaghan observed that it’s bad economics and can’t be blamed on expansion costs that should have been factored into the budget. Tackling the issue of lack of media coverage for women in sport, Janice Crosswhite, President of Australian Women’s Sport and Recreation Association & current VP for the International Association for Physical Education and Sport for Girls and Women spoke with the Sportzfan Radio panel. The Professor indicated that the Herald Sun’s only sports article on women this week was on Olympian, Sally Pearson but was buried towards the back pages. Janice shed some light on the Sports Commission’s research in 2010 showing some progress for equality for women in sport. She also commented on Olympic historian, Harry Gordon’s claim that since 1956, women have outperformed men in teams proportionate to medals won. Janice observed there was a lack of full time sports writers devoted to covering women’s sport or other “B” sports like basketball, swimming, track and field, squash, and gymnastics. Social media may be part of the solution as traditional means have failed to date. Daniel Eade came on to talk hoops and discussed the NBA and the NY Knicks surprising the league with their “Linsanity” Jeremy Lin. Daniel thought that after losing Carmelo Anthony and Amar’e Stoudemire for games the Knicks would be gone but they have rebounded with Lin at point guard. Injuries were a topic of discussion too, due to the condensed season with the big name’s not being able to handle so many minutes per night. There was also comment that the NBL had yet to release any further news about the new franchise bids for Melbourne and Brisbane.
Sportzfan Radio #183.2
12 December 2010 183.2 – Mark Fiorenti continues his discussion of the A League looking at Sydney Rovers dropping their bid to join and also reviews at Premier League and Champions League. John O’Callaghan and Nicole Chvastek return to discuss a number of sporting topics including the World Cup bid fiasco which highlighted the lack of leadership by those running the bid process for Australia and the secrecy of surrounding money spent on the bid. Daniel says that it was OK for Elle MacPherson to be involved with the bid….he wouldn’t complain about that. Nicole queries the cost benefit analysis of spending so much money for one vote. The Professor eblieves the money paid to consultants was an absolute waste.
John also looks at the ‘rivalry’ round in the ABL and he believes after four weeks that is an absolute nonsense idea. Sean says Brendan Fevola smashing a car windscreen in a baseball promotion gave the ABL some main stream press during the week but for all the wrong reasons. Daniel talks about the stupidity of one match last week being called a tie becaue of the time curfew restrictions at the stadium.
Nicole starts off a discussion with the Panel about Shane Warne – his suntan, his eyebrows and his teeth, the mediocrity that is Australia cricket and whether or not Warne will make a comeback. She also believes that Geelong officials should be deemed to be ‘negligent’ for allowing Bomber Thompson and Garry Ablett to not talk to each other for about eight months. She says whoever oversaw such a debacle should be kicked out of the Club.
Daniel and the Professor discuss the NBL, particularly the new imports with both the Adelaide 36ers and the Sydney Kings. They also talk NBA and the improvement of the New York Knicks this season after recruiting Amare Stoudemire. Daniel wonders if Carmelo Anthony will sign soon with the Knicks. He talks about Julius Hodge who says he has finished with Australia and won’t be back to play in the NBL.
Paul Dalligan also wants to talk ABL and he was impressed with his first game watching the Melbourne Aces. He also has NRL mail that Wayne Bennett will coach the Rabbitohs in 2012.
Sportzfan Radio #181.1
28 November 2010 181.1 – Daniel is suffering with a toothache and gets plenty of sympathy, especially from Stan who says if you don’t clean your teeth you pay the penalty. The Gelding is late but hopefully he has a note from home. Stan has his weekly question to Daniel on the Melbourne Tigers. Daniel says he doesn’t think Tigers coach Al Westover should be sacked because he likes him. The Gelding talks about the First Ashes Test and the form of Michael Hussey. Daniel wants to know why Brad Hodge isn’t in the team and Stan observes that it is probably due to Victorian batsmen having fallen foul of the selectors in the past. Dan Butterly delivers his US report and starts with a discussion of Vince Young hurling his pads into the stands and then texting an apology to the coach, Jeff Fisher. He thinks that it was easier to get rid of Brad Childress than Brett Favre in Minnesota. He doesn’t think Favre will quit until the end of the season. In the NBA he feels that the Miami Heat don’t have a leader on the team as Wade, LeBron and Chris Bosh are all playing ‘nice’ to each other. Daniel talks to Dan about LeBron’s return to Cleveland and says it should be an exciting game. He would go if he had a ticket. Daniel would like to see LeBron not voted into the starting five in the NBA All Star game and wants the Professor (and Sportzfan listeners) to vote for Amare Stoudemire to try and achieve this. Dan thinks LeBron will do the ‘powder clap’ in Cleveland. He has nothing new to report on Carmelo Anthony and says he will be staying with the Nuggets at this stage. In College football he is amazed that Boise State missed a field goal against Nevada that would have won the game. They went on to lose it and therefore won’t play for the national championship. Dan also talks on the BCS comments from Ohio State President Gordon Gee – he disagrees with him naturally. In MLB, the Yankees playing hardball with Derek Jeter but Dan believes he’ll eventually resign for what the Yankees have offered. Daniel explains the ‘powder clap’ for the listeners. The Gelding talks about the winners and losers from Sandown and Randwick and says the rain played havoc with the fields due to so many scratchings. The Panel discusses the heavy penalty handed out to rider Danny Nikolic over his behaviour to stewards after he was found wearing a modified racing vest.
Sportzfan Radio 161.1
4 July 2010 161.1 – Daniel wonders whether Gambo feels unsettled having been moved from panel operator after the Professor’s return from Sydney. Daniel also ponders the NBA feeding frenzy with free agents being signed for ridiculous figures including draft bust Darko Milicic getting a $20 million contract when everyone thought he should retire. The Panel considers throwing themselves into the free agency market for a fat contract. Gambo talks about the ‘mono cock’ in formula one racing. Dan Butterly talks basketball with the Knicks potentially going after Amare Stoudemire, Joe Johnson and Tony Parker. He says the Knicks fan base want LeBron, Chris Bosh and Dwayne Wade and won’t be satisfied with anything less. The Gelding talks racing and takes the credit as he and the Sydney Colt combined for 4 winners and 4 placings from 8 selections. Daniel and the Professor discuss the Boomers v ‘Argentina”. Daniel nodded off during the game and wonders whether Brett Brown’s team got anything out of playing a non-representative team of rookies. The Professor raises his idea of an NBL draft again as a means of getting publicity for the League.
