Sportzfan Radio show #238.2

@SportzfanRadio now available on iTunes!11 March 2012 238.2 – The second hour starts off with the Dr Leslie CSA. John O’Callaghan comes on the show to talk about the press release for the Lingerie League that is coming to Australia. He thinks it is a bad thing being the wrong message for sport and the wrong message for women. He believes if Sally Pearson was a man she would be front page news every day. John also wants to get rid of the title Sports Minister from the cabinet as it is just a “Minister for Good Times” position. He says Australia is obsessed with winning medals at the Olympics and the money being fed into winning medals should be put into grass roots sport. Daniel talks basketball and looks at the NBA with rookie Ricky Rubio from the Timberwolves tearing an ACL and missing not only the rest of the NBA season but also the Olympics. He also can’t understand why Australians would be begging Kyrie Irving to play for Australia. If he wants to play for the Boomers, it’s an honour. He only lived here for three months so he has a tenuous link with Australia at best. The New York Knicks are struggling and Linsanity seems to be wearing off. Daniel then looks at the possible trades before the trade deadline including Andrew Bogut, Dwight Howard, Andrew Bynum and Pau Gasol. He also looks at the NBL and all the right things the New Zealand Breakers are doing. They have also re-signed Darryl Corletto for a further two years. Daniel looks at the run towards the finals with five teams in the running for four spots. Paul Dalligan talks NRL and tries to explain how the Rabbitohs lost last Monday night’s game and he called it an horrific loss. He reviews the round two results and makes predictions for the games remaining. Daniel finishes the show talking about the move Troy and Brad Pitt. He asks Sportzfan Stan for advice about the achilles heel as he says Stan must have been alive back in 1AD.

Sportzfan Radio show #235.1

@SportzfanRadio now available on iTunes!19 February 2012 235.1 – Sportzfan Stan kick started the show with his weekly rant, this time on the AFL’s first financial loss in a decade amounting to $23.6 millon. The AFL’s blame-game included the start up costs of the Gold Coast and Greater Western Sydney teams.  John O’Callaghan observed that it’s bad economics and can’t be blamed on expansion costs that should have been factored into the budget.  Tackling the issue of lack of media coverage for women in sport, Janice Crosswhite, President of Australian Women’s Sport and Recreation Association & current VP for the International Association for Physical Education and Sport for Girls and Women spoke with the Sportzfan Radio panel. The Professor indicated that the Herald Sun’s only sports article on women this week was on Olympian, Sally Pearson but was buried towards the back pages. Janice shed some light on the Sports Commission’s research in 2010 showing some progress for equality for women in sport. She also commented on Olympic historian, Harry Gordon’s claim that since 1956, women have outperformed men in teams proportionate to medals won. Janice observed there was a lack of full time sports writers devoted to covering women’s sport or other “B” sports like basketball, swimming, track and field, squash, and gymnastics. Social media may be part of the solution as traditional means have failed to date. Daniel Eade came on to talk hoops and discussed the NBA and the NY Knicks surprising the league with their “Linsanity” Jeremy Lin. Daniel thought that after losing Carmelo Anthony and Amar’e Stoudemire for games the Knicks would be gone but they have rebounded with Lin at point guard. Injuries were a topic of discussion too, due to the condensed season with the big name’s not being able to handle so many minutes per night.  There was also comment that the NBL had yet to release any further news about the new franchise bids for Melbourne and Brisbane.

Sportzfan Radio #167.1

@SportzfanRadio now available on iTunes!15 August 2010 167.1 – The Panel kick off with a discussion on the proposed changes to AFL rules. In the US report Dan Butterly talks about the Mets Felix Rodriguez and the alleged attack of his girlfriend’s father at Citibank Stadium and agrees with the Professor that he may have tried for one strike out too many. He also discusses the MLB pennant races and still has hope that the Rockies will qualify for the playoffs. There is a discussion of the various Commissioner’s salaries (Bud Selig from the MLB wins by a long way) and the Professor wonders whether there is value for money, Dan thinks David Stern from the NBA is doing the best job at present. Dan thinks the Knicks are a dysfunctional franchise and this is evidenced by the fact that they have approached Isiah Thomas to become a “consultant” for the franchise. There is also an announcement by Dan of a cultural exchange between the Southern Football League and the Mountain West Conference with the SFL CEO visiting the MWC in the US for a week’s internship. The Gelding and the Sydney Colt talk racing and provide a comnprehensive review of the Caulfield and Rosehill results.
