The Gelding’s attention is on Flemington for the Melbourne Cup meeting. It’s the race that stops Australia. There is some real value in today’s tips. If three winners can get up from these selections it will be a reasonable day at the track!

Good luck to all the ‘once a year’ punters and those, like myself, who are referred to as ‘punt drunks’. It is not easy making a profit on the cup so I suggest a few dollars on some neddies who have been tipped to me either by a pro punter or our ever reliable ratings man.

Race 5 n2 KARUTA QUEEN Very short price but it is hard to see this getting beaten. Ran 2nd to the mighty Black Caviar, then won with a leg in the air at its next outing.

Unless you are a punt drunk or a Sydney Colt groupie you shouldn’t bet on Sydney as it is a rough day. Have some mail for a $34 horse today. A lounge chair, TVN’s coverage of Flemington and an online account with a corporate bookie is the go.

Race 7 n4 MERCONMAN e/w ($34w $9p) I have taken the quoted prices with Sportsbet (also available with IAS) this morning. This neddy has trialled well and worth a few bob e/w. If it flukes the win I will be able to pay off Greece’s national debt

Race 8n8 LIGHTINTHENITE ($4.0) My only query here is that the connections have left Christian Reith on board. His last ride, when the neddy was the subject of a national plunge (and my biggest bet of the year), bordered on criminal. He chased the tearaway leader in sectional times that made it completely impossible for the horse to have any chance. Any repeat will see Christian fed to the lions!!

The Professor believes that Danish Rock would have beaten the horses in the first five races at Traralgon. Sportzfan Stan and Daniel eventually get introduced and make up for lost time. There is a discussion regarding the televising of NBL games and how they select the games as Daniel thought it would be Perth v Melbourne on Friday night but it turned out to be Townsville v Cairns. Sportzfan Stan asks why people aren’t watching the games on TV and the overall feeling is that the games are on too late. Dan Butterly comes on to talk US sport and looks at the situation in Boston after the Red Sox meltdown with both their coach Terry Francona and GM Theo Epstein leaving. He also looks at the revelations that three pitchers were in the clubhouse during games eating fried chicken, drinking beer and playing video games while their teamates were out on the field. Dan looks at the ALCS and NLCS and believes the Texas Rangers and St Louis Cardinals will play off in the World Series. He comments that hitting is dominating at present. Dan discusses Pete Carroll’s attempt to get LeBron James to play wide receiver for the Seattle Seahawks via twitter and the shock teams so far this season in the NFL. He also looks at the ‘almost’ play of the year in College football by Brad Wing, LSU’s Aussie punter and finishes with a review of MWC basketball media day. The Gelding talks racing and reviews yesterday’s races at Caulfield. He got two selections up for the Ladies at the Tennis Club and also awarded an s-hit ride. The Gelding has also put together a Sportzfan Radio stable of horses for the listeners to follow for the Spring carnival.

He is full of praise for Holger Osieck and also reviews the other Asian Group standings. Mark looks at the A League and the Professor asks how long before the Melbourne Victory coach is under pressure. Mark says if Victory don’t beat Heart it will be a disastrous start to the season. Daniel talks basketball and the Professor takes him to task about how One HD are selecting the games. He feels decisions are made on a financial basis because it must be cheaper to go to Townsville than Perth. The Panel talk about the poor television ratings for the NBL while Sportzfan Stan discusses the benefit that Mills has given to the sport whilst he has been here. The Gelding compares the amount of newspaper columns given to all sports and decides basketball gets less coverage than rugby and soccer. The Professor asks Paul Dalligan where Todd Carney will land as it has been rumored he is being chased by at least four teams. Paul previews the Australia v New Zealand rugby league match predicting a close game but an Australian win. He also comments on Tim Tebow starting at QB for his Denver Broncos. The Panel talk about the big clash in the World Cup semi final between the Wallabies and New Zealand. The Panel unanimously select the Wallabies. To round off the show the Panel discuss AFL trade week and Casey Stoner winning the motorcycle GP.

Daniel says Melbourne Heart need to do something to get into the paper as Melbourne Victory are grabbing all the headlines at the moment. Daniel comes on to talk hoops and the Professor asks him what the segment should be called. Mark Fiorenti suggests ‘White Men Can Jump’. Daniel says he can’t so he has gone back to the drawing board. He talks about the start of the NBL season. Sportzfan Stan asks whether the Breakers after losing players are as good as last year. Daniel thinks that they will be as good. Paul Dalligan comes on to talk rugby league and reviews the NRL Grand Final. He discusses with the Panel the signing of Des Hassler by Canterbury to coach them in 2013. Paul also talks about the coming 4 nations tournament with the opening game between Australia and New Zealand. The Panel talk about the Rugby Union World Cup with the Wallabies taking on South Africa in the quarter final.
